Park Academy: Botanical Latin
Park Academy: Botanical LatinDate: Thursday, March 3, 2011 Time: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Address:Natural Resource Building, 1216 Ralston Ave., The Presidio, San Francisco, CA 94129
Botanical Latin – Omigosh! It's a dead language, but it's still aliiiive! With a background in languages and experience at New York Botanical Garden, Al Luongo (currently a docent at San Francisco Botanical Garden and Presidio resident and volunteer) leads a brief introduction to the Latin names for plants and how the names are constructed, focusing on plants found in the GGNRA. The class will look at some common Latin and Greek roots for plant names and botanical terms, and will also use some simple rules of thumb to pronounce plant names with confidence. We may even try our hand at creating a new name or two! This is a distillation of an 8-hour course the instructor taught at the New York Botanical Garden. You will get a copy of the full course notes including a list of useful books and Web sites.
Please note: Park Academy classes are meant as a special perk for volunteers, members, and employees. If you do not work for the Park or have not volunteered with us in the past year, bringing a donation (sliding scale of $1 to $10) to the class is strongly encouraged.
