Mountaintop Removal Mining: A West Virginia Activist's Perspective

Larry Gibson is West Virginia activist (and President of the Board of the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation) working to stop the destructive mining practice of mountaintop removal (MTR). This method of coal mining has been described as "strip mining on steroids." Coal companies remove the vegetation from an entire mountainside, use explosives to blow apart the mountaintop to access buried coal seams (removing up to 1,000 feet of elevation from the mountain in the process), and permanently fill surrounding streams and valleys with the undesirable waste rock that results.

Lunch will be served.
