The Beginning of the End of Nuclear Weapons?: Some Open Questions for Science and Technology
States have over the years developed and deployed weapons capable of destroying life on Earth. The international political situation has now changed: the strategic value of these weapons is declining and international leaders, including President Obama, have called for their eventual elimination. Easier said, of course, than done. Many scientific and technological questions must be resolved to enable states to embark on this process with confidence that their own security will not be endangered. This lecture will present a background on these weapons and discuss how science can help build a safer and more resilient future.
