Hack the Future!

Are you a 5th-12th grade student who wants to learn more about computers than they teach you in school? Then it's time to start teaching yourself!

Hack the Future is a one-day party / hackathon for youth, to show you what it's like to be a hacker and see if it's for you.

We won't tell you what to do. You'll be free to work on whatever you want. We will try to keep you from getting stuck, and we'll show you the way forward when you can't find it. This is a unique opportunity to learn the the state of the art in software engineering from the people who do it for a living.

Hack the Future will be split into two sections; an interactive, directed classroom-style environment, and an undirected independent-study style area.

If you know what you want to work on, you go to the independent area. It will have some adult volunteers who'll be available to answer questions and suggestion directions for projects, and they'll make rounds to check in on you, to help keep you from getting stuck.

If you don't know where to start, you start with the directed environment. It'll have a whiteboard and a projector, and we'll use it to have informal discussions on introductory programming topics, with suggestions for things you can break off and try on your own. As the day progresses, kids will find things to work on or run out of ideas, and filter back and forth between the two areas.
