A Tale of Three Cities: The Quest for Energy Efficient Street Lighting
As energy and maintenance costs begin to sky rocket, outdoor lighting has recently been targeted as a huge potential in cost reductions. In addition, the impacts of outdoor lighting on circadian cycle disruptions, nocturnal animal habitat, light trespass and sky glow have also been hot topics. Can current lighting designs and retrofits meet all of these sustainable challenges and still keep lighting quality? This seminar will explore the sustainability issues, and demonstrate unique solutions to maintaining and increasing quality lighting in our outdoor lighting solutions. There will be discussions on current guidelines and how white light, disability glare and discomfort glare affect our designs and installations. Also, we will explore how designs could provide better visibility while increasing way-finding and detection of people and objects. This seminar will consist of case studies about how three cities performed visibility tests and community subjective evaluations in order to assess the best street lighting replacement solutions.
