ABSTRACT
Working on Kinect
In the first 60 days after launch, Kinect for Xbox 360 shipped over 8 million units earning it the title of "Fastest Selling Consumer Device" by the Guinness Book of World Records It is arguably one of Microsoft's most ambitious recent undertakings, pushing contemporary limits of hardware manufacturing, real-time computer vision, user interface concepts, and traditional software engineering practices. This talk will chronicle some of my experiences working as a core researcher on this project from early incubation to product release, lessons learned, and difficult decisions along the way.
SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY
In 2008, Lee graduated with a Ph.D in Human Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University were he explored a variety of technologies to enhance the way we interact with computing devices. His projects ranged from multi-touch, haptics, immersive displays, brain-computer interaction, advanced projection technologies, augmented reality, and motion capture. His videos demonstrating how to create low-cost interactive whiteboards and 3D displays using a Nintendo Wii remote have accumulated over 15 million views on YouTube, and garnered the recognition of the prestigious TR35 awarded to the world's top 35 innovators under the age of 35 in 2008. In mid-2008, Lee joined Microsoft as a researcher in the Applied Sciences Group where he focused his efforts on helping Xbox develop Kinect, a controller free motion capture system. In early 2011, Lee joined Google as a Rapid Evaluator.
