Mathematical Magic Show
From Sir Isaac Newton to Dr. John Dee, many of the world's greatest
mathematicians were surprisingly, also conjurers.
Mathematicians were seeking the unknown and some of their findings were
unexpected and non-intuitive; just like magic!
With the audience's help, Dr. Elran of the Weizmann Insittue of Science will demonstrate card tricks that are based on number-based systems, probability theory and combinatorics. He will then reveal the mathematics rationale behind them.
Afterwards, Dr. Elran will seemingly whip up large complicated magic squares
within seconds, square and even cube numbers rapidly and perform complicated arithmetic in his head. He will show how this "impressive skill" is not due
to his super powers but rather to easy-to-use mathematical principles and
procedures. We will end with one of the most amusing and magical
mathematical topics: topology. Together we will untie seemingly impossible
objects such as loops of string that "knot" themselves as well as one, two, three and even 7 sided objects.
This day of fun math-learning is hosted by Celsius and Beyond and is led by Dr. Yossi Elran of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Dr. Elran co-leads the Distance Learning department of the Institute. He is a consultant for the Bloomfield Science Museum in Jerusalem and is the co-author of the 30 year old program Math-by-Mail. Dr. Elran studied the mathematics of chemical reactions, quantum mechanics and de-coherence.
