Health care restructuring in Canada and the US: Understanding the impact on the HIV Experience
This presentation will describe the results and public health implications of two comparative health care studies– one conducted in the US and one in Canada - that demonstrate the lived impact of health care restructuring practices on HIV patients and their providers. While the two studies demonstrate vast differences in terms of patient and provider experiences, they also demonstrate the common bond stemming from the need to revise and re-invent health care policy in the context of diminishing public sector resources. This presentation will also provide an overview of how these prior studies connect with my current work with HIV patients and providers in Nova Scotia, as this work will constitute a third wave of ethnographic research assessing the impact of globalization on health care in North America.
