The Death & Life of Monterey Bay: A Story of Survival

Hopkins Marine Station Director Steve Palumbi delivers a good-news story about the recovery of Monterey Bay. Once an industrial wasteland destroyed by the bubble economies of trade in otters, whales, abalone, and fish, the bay was able to recover thanks to ordinary citizens––a pioneering female mayor who established the first marine reserve, ecologist Ed Ricketts, and a handful of students with a vision about turning an abandoned cannery into a world-class aquarium. The broader message is about the interrelationship between sustainable ecosystems and sustainable economies, and how ordinary citizens with foresight and determination can save their own environment, and thus their economy.
