Consumer Electronics and Smart Cars

In the future, an increasing number of innovations in the area of infotainment, communication and driver assistance will only be possible through an intelligent communication network both within the vehicle and with the vehicles environment. As a result there are increasing requirements concerning the connectivity and data bandwidth of the E/E system.

In order to meet the future demands on E/E systems performance and scalability, a high data bandwidth and an efficient E/E architecture will be necessary.

BMW's E/E target architecture builds on Ethernet as the key technology for providing a high performance communication backbone in the vehicle. Ethernet and IP offer perfect conditions for the connectivity of the vehicle with the cloud, consumer electronics and Car2X.

Together with industrial partners, BMW has developed a suitable automotive solution for Ethernet and IP using an unshielded twisted pair cable.

BMW is not the only OEM which is certain that Ethernet and IP will be the most relevant high performance network for automotives in near future. With cooperation of different automobile manufacturers, suppliers and other non-automotive partners, the standardization platform OPEN Alliance for automotive Ethernet and IP has been founded in 2011. The OPEN Alliance forms the Ethernet standard to an automotive standard. Come and join us.
