Innovation: Design -- Is 'Design' Innovation?
Innovation: Design -- Is 'Design' Innovation?
WHAT:
JOHN MAEDA is a leader who integrates technology, design, and business into a 21st-century synthesis of creativity and innovation. An artist, graphic designer, computer scientist, and educator, he was named one of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century by Esquire and called the "Steve Jobs of academia" by Forbes. As president of Rhode Island School of Design, he is leading the movement to transform STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) to STEAM by adding Art. He believes art and design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the 20th century. Previously, Maeda taught media arts and sciences at MIT and served as associate director of research at MIT Media Lab. His books include The Laws of Simplicity and Redesigning Leadership. Maeda earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from MIT, followed by a PhD in Design Science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan and an MBA from Arizona State University. He received the AIGA Medal and is in the permanent collection of MoMA.
DON NORMAN is cofounder of the Nielsen Norman Group, an IDEO fellow, Trustee of IIT's Institute of Design (Chicago), and former Vice President of Apple. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was awarded the Benjamin Franklin medal in Computer and Cognitive Science. Don is professor emeritus of computer science and design at Northwestern University and of both psychology and cognitive science at the University of California, San Diego; has been a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Industrial Design at Korea's Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST); and has honorary degrees from the University of Padua in Italy and the Delft University of Technology in Netherlands. Don has authored numerous books, including Design of Everyday Things, Emotional Design, and Living with Complexity. He likes the fact that in addition to being named as one of the world's most influential designers, Business Week also labeled him a curmudgeon. "Question everything," he argues, "for questioning and debate provides deep understanding."
