Multipurpose Forestry--An Option for the Future?: S.J. Hall Lecturship in Industrial Forestry

Heinrich Spieckler

Heinrich Spiecker M.S '71 is director of the Institute for Forest Growth at the University of Freiburg, Germany, where he is also a professor. He has conducted extensive forest management research in Germany and internationally on issues such as changes in forest productivity; growing valuable broadleaved trees; and options for and consequences of converting man-made spruce forests to "close to nature" forests. Most recently, he coordinated projects dealing with future management possibilities for China's forests. Since forest ecosystems can only slowly adapt to new challenges, long-term strategies are needed.
His talk will present multipurpose forestry as an option to address the myriad needs that forests must fulfill for land owners and the society at large in a rapidly changing environment.
