Coho on the Brink- Brown Bag!
Endangered coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) live in several of the coastal streams within the Golden Gate national Recreational Area and Point Reyes National Seashore. Though once abundant, their population numbers have plummeted over the past century, and they are now teetering on the brink of extinction along the central California coast.
Because they are an endangered species, the National Park Service is responsible for monitoring and protecting coho in park streams. But how do we know how to help keep these fish from going extinct, and what have we done about it? How are park coho doing?
Park fisheries biologist Michael Reichmuth will explain the complex and fascinating coho lifecycle, describe on-going monitoring efforts to learn more about park coho populations and their habitat needs (including an update on the latest coho numbers), and show how our monitoring has helped shape the monumental restoration projects at Muir Beach and the Giacomini Wetlands.
Come help wrap up this year-long celebration and get endangered species coloring books and other goodies!
