SHARKTOBER with the Monterey Bay White Sharks Team

The Monterey Bay White Shark Project is an interdisciplinary research program involving scientists from Stanford University, UC Santa Cruz, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and the University of Washington. Together the team is using cutting-edge technologies including electronic tags, genomics, environmental DNA, drones, and ecological and oceanographic models to study the interactions of white sharks, sea lions, elephant seals and harbor seals. The project builds on 25 years of research in the Monterey Bay and Farallon National Marine Sanctuaries and aims to advance research and conservation of these species in the Monterey Bay, the California Current and the offshore Pacific environments they inhabit. Drs. Barbara Block, Daniel Costa, Corey Garza and Jason Scorse will be on hand along with their students, postdocs and scientific staff as they talk about their research. They will present a Stanford premiere of their new short film by local cinematographer Kip Evans. The film highlights the journey of these magnificent predators, their prey, and the latest scientific technology being deployed to reveal the hidden secrets of these predators.
